WEST KELOWNA–If the voters say “yes”, West Kelowna will be getting a new city hall.
“From the beginning, Council has wanted to invest in much more than just a City Hall. We wanted to put our money where our mouths are and kick start revitalization with our investment and we believe we will do exactly that with the West Kelowna Civic Centre project,” says West Kelowna mayor Doug Findlater.
The Civic Centre project is a public-private partnership involving privately owned land at 3641 Elliott Road.
West Kelowna tax-payers will be asked to approve borrowing up to $10.5 million to build a City Hall on the site.
Strategic BC Investments Inc. has proposed to build an office building and two residential buildings as well as a public plaza on the site.
Interior Health has agreed to locate its services in the office building, if the project goes ahead.
West Kelowna residents will have their say in an upcoming Alternative Approval Process.
That means unless 10 per cent of eligible voters submit forms to city hall in opposition of the plan over 30 days, construction will go ahead.
City staff are preparing the borrowing bylaw to present to Council.
Once adopted, the bylaw will need to be approved by the province before timelines can be applied for the AAP.
