Fire investigators are still on the scene of a blaze that damaged the Bedford Institute of Oceanography on Sunday evening.
The fire, which apparently started outside the building, affected the BIO’s technical shop, which services electronics for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans vessels and the Coast Guard.
“I thought the damage would be a lot worse but the response time from the fire department was very quick – they were able to put the fire out pretty quick,” said BIO facilities manager Leo Lohnes.
Investigators still don’t know the cause of the fire, and say it could take a couple of days to pinpoint how it started.
For now, the 17 employees who work in the shop are working in other areas of the BIO facility. Officials expect the building to be back in service before the end of the week.
