CALGARY – An amended bylaw that goes into effect on Monday makes it mandatory for apartment buildings, condos and other multi-family complexes in Calgary to provide residents with on-site recycling.
The City of Calgary, however, will not be involved in collecting the recyclables. Instead, private-sector recycling companies will provide collection and processing services.
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution for multi-family recycling,” the City of Calgary said on its website. “It requires flexibility and choice, which the private sector is best able to provide.”
The City of Calgary defines multi-family complexes as “five or more units on the same parcel of land.” This includes high-rise and low-rise apartments, townhouses, condos, mobile home parks, housing co-operatives and housing developments on private roads.
Calgarians whose multi-family complex hasn’t provided on-site recycling by Feb. 1 can file a bylaw complaint by calling 311 or using 311 online.
