Donations pour in to support woman held hostage in Kamloops bombing

Beds, dressers, clothes and money are all pouring in to support the woman and her four children whose house and belongings were lost in Friday’s hostage situation in Kamloops.

Little remains of their house after a man – who held the woman hostage for hours, before finally releasing her to police negotiators – detonated the explosions strapped to his chest.

Virginia Rogers, a friend of the woman, set up a donation box at a storage facility at 600 Okanagan Way in Kamloops. She said her friend, who is not yet ready to speak about the ordeal, has been moved by the community’s response.

“She’s overwhelmed with happiness for all the donations, and she’s coping,” Rogers said, adding that the trauma “is still all really fresh in her mind.”

Rogers said that they now have enough beds and dressers, and have received approximately $400 in cash and gift cards, but more items are needed for the family of five.

“We’re looking for kitchen items, boys clothing – we’ve been getting a lot of girls, but not so much boys. Shoes, we’re looking for shoes,” she said.

“There’s one little boy who has trampoline lessons, and so we’re looking for maybe a mini-workout trampoline that he could use at home.… It would help him go to sleep.”

Anyone interested in donating items or money to the family are asked to contact Rogers by phone at 778-220-2530.
