B.C. Dragoons keep military tradition alive, appoint new leader

Don’t be surprised if you see more Canadian military on the streets of Kelowna: it is part of an initiative introduced by the new leader of the B.C. Dragoons.

Leadership of the Kelowna-based reserve regiment was handed over to a new officer on Wednesday night: Sean Parker is the new regimental sergeant major of the B.C. Dragoons.

A change of appointment parade, filled with pomp and circumstance, was held outside the armory in Kelowna. Parker is now the highest-ranking non-commission member of the unit and is responsible for commanding, coaching and mentoring the soldiers.

But Parker also has another goal in mind.

“We want to get our folks out in the public a lot more,” Parker said. “We want to get them involved with the local population so they see us as part of the community and not just guys in green that hide behind the fence all the time. It’s not all about being in the woods and carrying weapons.”

Parker started with the Dragoons in 1986. His appointment to the RMS position is something he says he has always aspired to.
