Matt Dunstone, Abby Ackland to represent Manitoba at Canadian Junior Curling Championships

Matt Dunstone is returning to the Canadian Junior Curling Championship after beating fellow Granite Curling Club skip Derek Oryniak 7-4 in the Manitoba men’s final in Rivers.

Dunstone opened the scoring in the second end with a deuce. He later put up a triple in the sixth frame to go up 6-2. Both rinks shook hands following nine complete ends. With the victory, Dunstone finishes this year’s tournament undefeated. He cruised through round robin play, picking up seven wins to earn himself a spot in the 1-vs-1 page playoff. Dunstone got past Assiniboine Memorial’s JT Ryan 7-2 in the game to qualify for the championship match.

Dunstone won both the provincial and national titles back in 2013. He finished third at the World Junior Curling Championships the same year by beating Sweden in the bronze medal game.

Joining Dunstone at the Canadian championships is Abby Ackland. The Fort Rouge skip handed Assiniboine Memorial’s Laura Burtnyk her first loss of the tournament by running her out of rocks in the tenth end of the women’s final. Ackland stole a single point in the fourth end as well as a deuce in the seventh en route to a 7-5 win. She also hung up two points in the sixth frame.

The 2016 Canadian Junior Curling Championships take place January 23-31 in Stratford, Ontario. The winners will wear the maple leaf at worlds in Turkey in March.
