The 73rd annual Golden Globes were handed out on Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, Calif., and it was one of the most unpredictable ceremonies in recent memory.

The awards show honoured the best of TV and movies in the past year. In the TV categories, newcomer series took home the trophies — Mr. Robot for Best TV Show, Drama and Mozart in the Jungle for Best Comedy/Musical. Mad Men leading man Jon Hamm won Best Actor, TV Drama after playing the role of Don Draper for six seasons, and Taraji P. Henson won Best Actress for her performance in Empire.

In movies, The Revenant steamrolled the competition in three huge categories: Best Picture, Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor. The Martian won Best Musical or Comedy (which left much of Twitter scratching their heads, since it seemed more drama than comedy). Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress, Comedy for her work in Joy, Brie Larson won Best Actress, Drama for Room, and Best Actor, Comedy went to Matt Damon for The Martian.

Comedian and actor Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony for the fourth time, drawing as many laughs as he did groans.
