Cazeneuve urged people in the region to exercise “the greatest caution because of heightened risks of avalanches.”

The mountain rescue service in the Chamonix region said the two killed were a man and a woman, and were the first casualties in the region this season. The area, with its challenging slopes and breathtaking panoramas, is popular with climbers from around the world.
