EDMONTON – Six people were injured Tuesday morning in a multiple vehicle collision southwest of Edmonton, including one person who was critically injured and another who suffered serious injuries.
The crash involved three semi-trucks and eight other vehicles on Highway 39 about two kilometres east of the Village of Thorsby.
STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene.
STARS flew one person in critical condition to hospital, while one seriously injured person and four other people in stable condition were taken to Edmonton-area hospitals by EMS.
“The one person was injured quite seriously in one of the semi vehicles. It was quite a serious extraction. It took some time. STARS was on scene for quite a few minutes as they extracted that person,” Sgt. Corey Kyle, RCMP said.
“There was one small child and another adult, and all of them received injuries as a result of the collision. I believe the child was the least injured of them all though.”

While the exact cause of the collision has not been determined, wind blew smoke from a controlled burn in the area onto the highway, reducing visibility, according to police.
Police said the conditions led to an earlier collision in the area.
The highway was reopened Tuesday night.
Thorsby is 70 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
