What’s open and closed in Calgary on Christmas

CALGARY – A lot of local businesses are adjusting their hours of operation during the holidays.

Here’s a look at some companies and services that are closed for Christmas – and others that are operational:

Calgary Transit

Christmas Eve, Dec. 24:
CTrain: Regular weekday service
Bus: Regular service with minor shuffle of increased service over the noon hour versus the afternoon rush hour.

Christmas Day, Dec. 25:
Free all day!
CTrain: Runs every 15 minutes throughout the day, then every 30 minutes from 10 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.
Bus: Service every 30-45 minutes on Routes 1, 3, 14, 20, 72, 73, 100, 300 and 301.

Boxing Day, Dec. 26:
CTrain & Bus: Sunday level of service for both

New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31
CTrain: Extended night service with last train leaving downtown at 3 a.m. Trains run every 15 minutes.
Bus: Extended night service every 30-45 minutes on Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 17, 24, 112, 301 and 302. Last trips will leave downtown at approximately 3 a.m. Check the New Year’s Eve service page for more information.

New Year’s Day, Jan. 1
CTrain & Bus: Sunday level of service for both

Parking

All on-street parking is free and Holiday rates will in effect at select Calgary Parking Authority surface lots and parkades on Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1.

Skating

The following arenas will offer free skating from 1-2:30 p.m. on Boxing Day:
Ernie Starr Arena
Frank McCool Arena
Murray Copot Arena
Optimist / George Blundun Arenas
Rose Kohn / Jimmie Condon Arenas
Shouldice Arena
Stew Hendry / Henry Viney Arenas
Stu Peppard Arena

Facility Closures

All aquatic and fitness centres are closed Dec. 25, 26 and Jan. 1.
Both Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26 however both facilities will be open on Friday, Jan. 1 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
All arenas are closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
The Calgary Soccer Centre will close at noon on Dec. 24 remain closed through Boxing Day.
The North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres are closed through Jan. 4.
The Nature Centre  at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26 as well as Jan. 1.
All City-operated landfills are closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
The Animal Services Centre will close at noon on Dec. 24, and re-open Dec. 27. The facility is also closed  Jan. 1.
Administrative offices, including City Hall, close at noon on Dec. 24. These facilities are also closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Around the House

Residential Garbage & Recycling Collection

There are temporary schedule changes for those who receive residential collection on Fridays. There will be no collection on Friday, Dec. 25 and Friday, Jan. 1.

If you normally receive blue and black cart collection on Friday, please put your carts out on the following days:

  • Monday, Dec. 28, 2015
  • Monday, Jan. 4, 2016

Regular Friday collection will resume on Friday, Jan. 8. There are no changes to Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday collection over the holidays.

Christmas tree recycling

City crews will begin to pick up real Christmas trees from households with black cart garbage collection on Friday, Jan. 8 at 7 a.m. There will also be temporary drop-off locations open between Dec. 26 and Jan. 31.
