Leland Hotel Christmas Dinner menu (1897). Jim Dangerfield

WINNIPEG — Forget turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce; a Christmas dinner menu from a once luxurious Winnipeg hotel, gives a glimpse of how people dined more than a century ago.

Built around 1884, the Leland Hotel was a prestigious hot spot in the city. Located at William Avenue near King Street,  it had 100 rooms, hot and cold running water, a billiard room, a barber shop, and reading rooms. But after many years of neglect, the building sat empty and turned into a run-down hotel.  It when then destroyed by an arson fire in 1995.

One of the items that did remain, is a Christmas dinner menu from the hotel, dated back to 1897.
