Snowy, icy conditions lead to several collisions along Highway 16 west of Edmonton

EDMONTON — Heavy snow west of Edmonton made for extremely poor driving conditions along Highway 16 Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after noon Wednesday, RCMP said there were several collisions and vehicles in the ditch along Highway 16 between Stony Plain and Spruce Grove. Officers were worried if road conditions worsened they would be forced to completely shut down the busy roadway.

Luckily that didn’t happen, but more than 15 separate collisions were reported, many of which involved several vehicles.

One person was taken to hospital with  minor injuries .

Highway 16 was down to one lane in each direction between Highway 779 and the Jennifer Heil overpass for a short period of time. The highway was reopened and traffic was flowing as normal shortly after 3:30 p.m.

RCMP said road conditions remained poor Wednesday afternoon, with the highway covered in snow and ice.

Police are asking drivers to slow down and drive for the conditions.
