Hemsworth posted a photo to Instagram, showcasing some pretty major weight loss:

But don’t worry, Hemsworth fans — it’s all for a movie role. Titled In the Heart of the Sea, the movie takes place in 1820 and follows the doomed crew of the whaling ship Essex after an attack by a massive whale; if it sounds familiar, it’s because it’s based on the true story that inspired the classic novel Moby Dick.

The Aussie actor, 32, had to get down to skin-and-bones for the shipwreck scenes, and in order to do that he restricted himself to as low as 500 calories a day.

“We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 500, 600, 700 calories a day [for] a good three or four weeks, and it’s going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we’ll be together in our misery,” Hemsworth told Entertainment Tonight while he was filming. “I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment.”

We’re sure he’ll be back to his old buff self in no time.
