EDMONTON — The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a 46-year-old man died while in Edmonton police custody.
Just before noon Monday, the Edmonton Police Service was transporting six prisoners from the EPS cell block to the Edmonton Remand Centre. While being loaded into the transport van, one of the prisoners was yelling and kicking, police said.
While on the way to the remand centre, the officers driving the van noticed the prisoner had quieted down. Police stopped the van to check on the man and discovered he was unresponsive and in medical distress.
Officers began to perform CPR on the man while EMS was dispatched. The prisoner was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Director of Law Enforcement has directed ASIRT to investigate the prisoner’s death.
ASIRT said no further details will be released while the investigation is underway.
The EPS confirmed the death occurred but would not comment further.
