U of R receives 150k donation for new aboriginal students award

REGINA – The University of Regina received a large donation Thursday from the Bank of Nova Scotia, totaling $150,000.

The money will be used to establish the Scotiabank Aboriginal Entrance Award.

The award will be available starting Fall of 2016 for first year aboriginal students.

Those applying must be in good academic standing with demonstrated community involvement.

First Nations students in attendance for the announcement called the investment is a welcome benefit.

“I think it’s really wonderful. I’m just really happy for all the students who are going to have the opportunity to apply for it. I think it’s really going to be beneficial and it’s really going to support the students,” said Kecia Cook, a fourth year Indigenous Studies major.

Nearly 12 per cent of the university’s student population self-declared as being of aboriginal descent.
