WINNIPEG — More than four years after the East Elmwood Community Centre burned to the ground, the building officially re-opened its doors at a new location Tuesday.

The early morning blaze forced the evacuation of several surrounding homes in March of 2011. It took crews hours to get it under control. The destruction left three dozen families scrambling when their daycare was lost in the $ 1 million fire. The entire building on Beach Avenue between Gateway and Lagimodiere was completely destroyed. Officers later determined the fire was arson.

The new East Elmwood Community Centre at 490 Keenleyside features a regulation-sized gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, kitchen, dressing rooms and an outdoor rink. The new centre also includes many environmentally-friendly initiatives such as low-flow plumbing, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and parking spaces for 21 bicycles.
