Colouring books for grown ups flying off the shelves

WINNIPEG — It’s usually a challenge for children, but staying between the lines has grown to be a popular way for adults to escape every day stress.

“It’s easy to get lost in technology,” Taylor Gagne said. Gagne currently studies at University of Winnipeg. “I find I relax when I am working on a picture and it takes my mind off things.”

Gagne isn’t alone. Adult colouring books have been flying off the shelves in Winnipeg. The books feature intricate designs and many of them are advertised as a means of relaxation.

“It started running downhill about a year ago and it never really stopped getting bigger,” David Lawrence at McNally Robinson Booksellers said. “Pretty much every major publisher and some smaller publishers now have lines of adult colouring books.”

While the colouring book craze may be fairly new, art therapy has been used as a more intricate form of healing for years. Art Therapist Kayla Cardinal explains that colouring is a more simple way for adults to focus and be present.

“A lot of people will do that through meditation or through yoga, through mindfulness,”Cardinal said. “That’s essentially what this is. It’s a form of mindfulness, it’s about centering and grounding yourself.”

Adult colouring books can be found at big bookstores as well as independent bookstores in Winnipeg.
