Claresholm shooting survivor Shayna Conway back in P.E.I.

The lone survivor of a triple murder-suicide near Claresholm, Alberta last year is now home in Prince Edward Island for the first time since the horrific attack.

Shayna Conway, 21, was travelling with her three friends Mitch Maclean, Tanner Craswell and Tabitha Stepple along a dark highway on December 15, 2011, when police say their vehicle was forced off the road by Stepple’s ex-boyfriend Derek Jensen.

Moments later, police say Jensen opened fire on the group, leaving Conway with three gunshot wounds.

The group was travelling from Lethbridge to the Calgary International Airport, so that Maclean and Craswell could head home to P.E.I. for the holidays.

Stepple had come along to keep Conway company on the long drive.

Conway spent months recovering at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, before she was well enough to take a flight home.

When she arrived in P.E.I. on Thursday night, Conway was greeted by family and friends at Charlottetown Airport, receiving hugs and kisses from loved ones.

Conway arrived in a wheelchair, with her friends and family surrounding her. She is able to walk, although she is using the help of a cane.

One of the last times we saw Conway was in Lethbridge, as she attended the memorial for her three friends in January. Although she didn’t speak at the event, a recording of her was played for the somber crowd.

Conway says the outpouring of support from P.E.I. has been overwhelming.

She still has a lot of recovery ahead of her, and says her left hand still isn’t working properly but she’s happy to be walking.
