EDMONTON – An Alberta volunteer organization is accusing the federal government of neglecting the needs of aboriginal women in the province.
The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters says half of the women who are coming into shelters across the province are of aboriginal descent.

Jan Reimer, the council’s provincial co-ordinator, says a report done last year found six on-reserve shelters received $2.2 million less in funding than shelters that receive provincial funding.
Reimer says running a women’s shelter is never easy, but those on reserves face an even greater struggle to provide services.
She says funding increases have been frozen for about five years and the issue must be addressed. (CHED)
