UPDATE: Stolen ambulance stopped by police, woman in custody

DARTMOUTH – A 41-year-old woman from Lower Sackville is facing several charges after an ambulance was stolen earlier today in Dartmouth.

Staff Sgt. Bill Morris said the theft was reported to Halifax Regional Police by Emergency Health Services around 11:30 this morning.

Live tracking helped police find the ambulance as it was driving down Highway 111 northbound, toward the MacKay Bridge.

Morris said the driver swerved numerous times at police, and at one point struck a cruiser.

“We tried to slow her down,” said Morris, “she just continued on.”

As the woman was nearing the tolls at the MacKay bridge, she swerved again, hitting another police cruiser, before hitting the concrete median.

“Even as the vehicle was pinned, she still tried to accelerate and get away,” said Morris.

Police had to break the window of the ambulance to get the woman out.

Two police officers received minor injuries. Two police vehicles as well as the ambulance were damaged.

The woman was taken into custody at the scene, and is facing charges of dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, fleeing police, and theft of a motor vehicle.
