Quebec government slaps Concordia University with $2-million fine

QUEBEC – The Quebec government has slapped Concordia University with a $2-million fine for golden handshakes it gave senior personnel.

The high-priced departure packages totalled $3.1 million for five employees.

Education Minister Line Beauchamp says the Montreal university displayed a lack of rigour and must face the consequences.

The fine, which Beauchamp announced today, comes amid an increasingly bitter strike by thousands of college and university students against proposed tuition hikes.

Many Concordia students expressed outrage when news of the expensive payoffs broke over the last few years, given the budgetary challenges faced by universities.
