Jacques Parizeau’s wife Lisette Lapointe to retire from political life

MONTREAL – The wife of former Quebec premier Jacques Parizeau _ a political power in her own right _ has decided not to run in the next election.

Lisette Lapointe has been sitting as an Independent in the provincial legislature since she was among a handful of longtime members who quit the Parti Quebecois last summer.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Today’s announcement is a blow to Option Nationale, the new pro-independence party that Lapointe had considered joining.

The 68-year-old says the time has come to retire from political life.

Parizeau was the PQ premier who called the last Quebec independence referendum in 1995, which came within one percentage point of breaking up the country.

Lapointe had been an active member in the PQ since its early days and was elected to the legislature twice since 2007.
