WATCH: Dr. Robert Ballard gives Global BC’s Kylie Stanton a tour of the Nautilus that just pulled into Victoria Harbour.
The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada is set to launch an unprecedented journey that will give a rare real-time glimpse into the deep undersea world.
The Exploration Vessel Nautilus and research vessel Thomas G. Thompson are equipped with robotic vehicles that will offer livestreaming video of research dives to the seafloor, which they hope will allow a better understanding of earthquakes, tsunamis, even the impacts of human-induced noise on marine mammals.
The three-week expedition, which begins tomorrow, will visit eight sites in the Salish Sea and Pacific Ocean.

The research will be led by Robert Ballard, the renowned oceanographer who was part of the team that discovered the wreck of the Titanic back in 1985.
He says the Nautilus is up to the task.
“This is the E/V Nautilus,” he said. “Its mission is to go where no one has gone before on planet Earth.”
“We’ve discovered more shipwrecks in the deep sea than anyone on the planet.”
