WINNIPEG — Monday is day one of the new community mailboxes for many in Winnipeg but for residents in one St. Vital neighbourhood, the new system is already failing.

The mailboxes along Sandale Drive were installed on Saturday.

When residents went to check them out, they found their brand new keys didn’t work.

“It’s frustrating,” said one resident.

When Shelley Boss tried her key it didn’t work either.

Boss continued to try the other mailboxes and eventually it worked: on a different box; not the one assigned to her.

“It’s the middle of the month and people are waiting for cheques,” she said. “What happens when someone gets mine? Will they return it to me?”

It was a sentiment echoed by others in the community.

Boss has already repeated her concerns to Canada Post.

“Sounds like there was a mix-up with the keys,” Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton told Global News.

Boss said she hopes the situation will be fixed immediately.
