Summary: This new riding is a smaller version of the former Whitby-Oshawa riding. Voters here may find their ballot looks familiar, with the Conservative, Liberal and Green Party candidates from the 2014 by-election in Whitby-Oshawa all running again. The winner of that race was Conservative MP Pat Perkins, who held the seat for the party after the death of Jim Flaherty.
Boundaries: This new riding is the western half of the former Whitby-Oshawa riding, consisting only of the town of Whitby.
Last Election: In the Whitby-Oshawa by-election, just 31.8 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot. Of those, 49.3 per cent voted for Conservative Perkins, with Liberal Celina Caesar-Chavannes taking 40.7 per cent. In 2011, voters within the boundaries of this new riding voted 58.8 per cent Conservative, followed by 21.4 per cent NDP.
History: Liberal Judi Longfield was the first MP elected when this riding was created as Whitby-Oshawa in 2004. Conservative Jim Flaherty defeated her in 2006, and won the seat easily in each election until his death in 2014.
