Summary: A predominately rural riding to Ottawa’s northwest, longtime Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant is seeking her sixth term in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke.

Boundaries: Running from west of Ottawa to northern Ontario, this district includes all of Renfrew County along the Ottawa River, the eastern half of Algonquin Provincial Park and the area to its north and south.

Last Election: Gallant defeated Independent Hec Clouthier, who served as Liberal MP in the riding from 1997 to 2000, by 34.7 per cent.

History: The rural riding to Ottawa’s northwest had actually been held by the Liberals for 65 years prior to Gallant’s election—nearly half of that time under Len Hopkins, MP of the area from 1965 to 1997. Provincially, the riding has been held by PC MPP John Yakabuski since 2003.

Demographics: 10 per cent of people had Polish origins as of the 2011 National Household Survey, the second highest number in Ontario. Just 5.15 per cent of people were immigrants, the seventh lowest number in Ontario.
