Summary: Conservative MP John Carmichael broke a five-election win streak by the Liberal Party with his win in this riding in 2011. He is seeking re-election. Boundary redistribution may work in his favour, as it brings more people who voted Conservative in 2011 into this riding. This is also a rematch with Liberal Rob Oliphant, the incumbent who Carmichael defeated in the last election.
Boundaries: This riding includes York Mills, St Andrew-Windfields, Bridle Path, Sunnybrook, Mount Pleasant East, Leaside-Bennington and Thorncliffe Park. This riding did see boundary changes for 2015, with some communities moving into Don Valley East. Mount Pleasant East is new to this riding, it was previously represented by the St. Paul’s riding.
Last Election: Carmichael defeated Liberal incumbent Rob Oliphant by just 611 votes. Had the current riding boundaries been in effect in 2011, the Conservative margin of victory would have been 1,088 votes.
History: There is a long history between the Liberal and Conservative candidates here. The two first faced off in 2008, when Oliphant came out on top by a margin of 5 per cent. Liberal John Godfrey represented this riding from 1993 until 2008, winning easy victories in each election.
Demographics: The average income (as of the 2011 National Household Survey) is $87,545—highest in the nation.
