Federal Election 2015: Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing riding results

Summary: NDP MP Carol Hughes has held this seat since 2008. She is seeking re-election.

Boundaries: This riding is in central northern Ontario, mostly north and east of Sault Ste. Marie. Through boundary redistribution, this riding added a small portion of the Nickel Belt riding, as well as the southern most portion of the Sault Ste. Marie riding.

Last Election: NDP Hughes earned 51.7 per cent of the vote to defeat Conservative Ray Sturgeon, who earned 30.19 per cent. If these new boundaries had been in effect, the NDP would have earned 49.9 per cent and the Conservatives 32.5 per cent.

History: This riding was a Liberal stronghold from its creation in 1968, until the NDP victory in 2008. Voters have not elected a PC or Conservative MP since this riding was created.

Demographics: The median age is 48.4, third highest in the province. The riding also has the second largest aboriginal population in Ontario, at 17.7 per cent of residents (according to the 2011 National Household Survey).
