Summary: This riding was a Liberal stronghold from its creation in 1917, so it was a big upset when the NDP’s Nycole Turmel won in 2011. She is seeking re-election.
Boundaries: This Ottawa-area riding includes the former city of Hull and most of the former city of Aylmer. Geographically, this riding is much smaller than it was in 2011, with parts of the former city of Aylmer now in the Pontiac riding,
Last Election: NDP Turmel won with 59.2 per cent of the vote, defeating the Liberal incumbent Marcel Proulx, who took 20.3 per cent.
History: Before 2011, voters in this riding had only ever elected Liberal MP’s. The only time a Liberal did not represent this riding was from 1990 to 1993, when Gilles Rocheleau crossed the floor to the new Bloc Québécois party, only to be defeated in the next election. Marcel Proulx had held the seat for 12 years when he was defeated by Turmel.
Demographics: The median income (as of the 2011 National Household Survey) is $34,825, eighth highest in the province.
