Montreal police operation encourages cycling safety in Plateau

WATCH ABOVE: Montreal police were out in the Plateau Tuesday to conduct a road safety operation to encourage cyclists to use the bike paths and follow road rules. Global’s Elysia Bryan-Baynes reports.

MONTREAL – Cyclists in the Plateau should take some extra precautions Tuesday – or face a possible fine from Montreal police.

Police were on the corner of Berri and Cherrier streets conducting a road safety operation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Their aim is to encourage cyclists to use the bike paths and lanes throughout the Plateau as part of the city’s “100 per cent vigilant” campaign.

The operation is mostly educational, but a police press release also noted officers would be issuing tickets for any rule-breaking cyclists – that means anyone who doesn’t stop at stop signs and red lights or who has headphones in.

Police were also supposed to have an operation on nearby Saint-Denis Street between Sherbrooke and Rachel streets to draw drivers’ attention to “dooring” – when a car door is opened suddenly, hitting a cyclist.

Dooring, even if accidental, can result a fine.

It was cancelled because of the rain.
