TORONTO — It takes a lot to impress the people of New York City. Just ask Brandy Norwood.
The Grammy winner, best known by her first name only, got a chilly reception recently when she gave subway riders a private performance of “Home” from The Wiz.
“What y’all thought of that? Y’all thought that was cool?,” Brandy asked her captive but less than captivated audience. “Hello? Nobody heard me singing? Nobody cares?”
Brandy, who was being videotaped by friend Frank Silent after leaving the gym, then put on her best diva act for the camera.
“The people in New York are very rude,” she jokingly declared. “I just sang from my heart. Nobody on the train responded and I am very emotional right now.”
Equally unimpressed was Brandy’s 13-year-old daughter.
Brandy told the New York Post the teen told her: “Mom, it’s not that New Yorkers are rude, it’s just that they thought you were crazy! Who does that?”
In addition to her music career, Brandy has acted in films and television — and made her Broadway debut this year in Chicago.
Brandy, who hasn’t released an album since 2012, wasn’t about to get off the subway without some acknowledgement, though. She solicited the opinion of a man standing beside her — and got some sage advice.
“You’re too into yourself,” he told the 36-year-old singer. “Go for it. We’ve seen this a million times. You have to do something different.”
The New Yorker seemed to believe if Brandy can make it there, she can make it anywhere.
“You’ve got talent, man.”
