Winnipeg city hall evacuated in latest bomb scare false alarm

WINNIPEG – Winnipeg’s city hall was  evacuated Monday in one of several suspicious package scares.

Staff left the building and police units including the bomb squad were on scene at about 11:30 a.m. Monday but cleared the scene before noon.

Minutes earlier, police and fire crews had been at a Canada Post facility on McDermot Avenue for a report of a suspicious package that proved to be a false alarm.

Police have warned the public and the legal community in particular to be on the lookout for packages similar to the ones containing bombs that were mailed to law firms and other addresses in Winnipeg last week.

One mail bomb exploded in the hands of a lawyer at a firm on River Ave. on Friday; Maria Mitousis, 38, is in stable condition in hospital.

Two other explosive devices were discovered on the weekend and safely detonated by police at a law firm on Stradbrook Ave. and a business on Washington Ave.

Police have charged Guido Amsel, 49, with attempted murder and other offenses but warn they aren’t sure how many other packages may have been sent through the mail.
