Scenic Acres Park closed after group approaches moose

WATCH: A park in Northwest Calgary will likely remain closed for the weekend to allow a family of moose to find a new home. Doug Vaessen reports.

CALGARY  – The ravine area of Calgary’s Scenic Acres Park was closed on Thursday after reports of a moose encounter on Wednesday night.

Signs warning people not to approach a cow and calf moose seen in the area have been posted since May 15, but officials say not everyone heeded the warnings.

A group of people reportedly approached a moose on Wednesday night, according to Brendan Cox, spokesperson for Fish and Wildlife officers.

“They backed off when the moose bluff-charged, and then the moose calmed down,” said Cox in an email to Global News. “It is good that no one was injured, but moose are large and powerful animals and can be quick to defend themselves if they feel threatened.”

Cox said the area, close to the river, has been closed so the animals can have the space they need to leave.

Fish and Wildlife officers are monitoring the situation and ask people to report sightings to the Report A Poacher Hotline at 1-800-642-3800.

“If you encounter a moose, back away slowly and make your way to a more populated area or into a building,” said Cox. “Look for obstructions to put between you and the moose.”
