EDMONTON – RCMP say a 58-year-old woman died Monday afternoon at the University of Alberta hospital after a serious crash north of Edmonton on Friday.

Four people, including two young children, were taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries Friday evening after a collision just east of Gibbons.

RCMP say a semi-truck heading north on Highway 28A collided with an SUV, which was heading west on Highway 643. Officers say there was a stop sign at the junction, but the SUV proceeded onto Highway 28A before it was safe to do so.

Two women inside the SUV were taken by ground ambulance to hospitals in Edmonton.

On Monday, RCMP said the 21-year-old was in serious but stable condition. The 58-year-old succumbed to her injuries.

Two young children were transported by STARS Air Ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. They were both in stable condition Saturday, RCMP said.

A family member told Global News on Monday the children were improving: the eight-month-old boy had already been released from hospital and the four-year-old girl was “doing better.” RCMP confirmed the baby had been discharged and the child was in stable condition in recovery.

At this point RCMP cannot confirm the relationship between the people in the SUV, but say the children have the same last name.

The woman driving the semi-truck suffered minor injuries in the collision.
