TORONTO – A grand jury in Kentucky has indicted three people in connection with the slaying of a Canadian tourist in town for the Kentucky Derby, while funeral arrangements have been announced for the victim.

Prosecutors say the grand jury on Wednesday indicted Fahed Abu-Diab, Fatima Abu-Diab and Tyrone Thomas.

They are charged in the shooting death of 49-year-old Scott Hunter of Toronto. Police say Hunter and a friend were walking back to their Louisville hotel, hours after the Derby, when the suspects decided to rob them.

Police say Hunter was allegedly shot during a struggle with the attackers who robbed him at random after he attended the famed horse race.

All three defendants face murder and robbery charges. Fahed Abu-Diab and his sister, Fatima Abu-Diab, also face drug charges.

In a Facebook post last week, Toronto pub House on Parliament described Hunter, who was a bartender there, as an entrepreneur with a heart of gold.

“We will remember him as a tough-as-nails co-worker with a heart of gold, always there with a warm hug, a shoulder to cry on, a quick grin and funny as hell.”

Hunter was also behind Grinder Coffee, a cafe in Leslieville, which posted on Facebook Saturday that donations could be made to SickKids Hospital in Toronto or the Good Shepherd men’s centre in Hamilton in lieu of flowers.

They added that the service will be followed by a celebration of Hunter’s life to be held at An Sibin Pub in Toronto on Friday, which will be open to the public after 10 p.m.
