Death notice premature, owner maintains hope missing ‘cargo cat’ will be found

EDMONTON – The past two months have been terribly trying for Vanessa Summerfield.

In late September Summerfield received a call from an Air Canada employee telling her that her black and white cat ‘George,’ which she was sending to stay with family in Ontario, had gone missing from an Air Canada cargo hold.

“I was hysterical, upset, angry, I just couldn’t believe this actually happened,” Summerfield told Global News at the time. “He was my family and I lost him.”

Staff at the Edmonton International Airport have since been on the lookout for the missing cat, and ‘missing’ posters have been posted throughout the airport.

Then, on November 23, Summerfield received a call from Air Canada informing her that George had been found, dead.

The following week, Summerfield, who lives in Fort McMurray, made arrangements for a friend who lives in Edmonton to pick up George’s remains. It was quickly determined that the cat thought to be George was in fact a female.

Summerfield made arrangements for the cat’s remains to be examined by a veterinarian, who concluded that “it is my firm belief that this dead animal found at the Air Canada grounds is NOT the cat believed to be George.”

Summerfield is disappointed that the cat’s identity wasn’t confirmed before she was told it was George, but is holding out hope that the next call she receives will bring better news.
