EDMONTON — The City of Edmonton has expanded Wifi service to the Southgate LRT Station.
The City has had free public Wifi service in a number of public locations but not in LRT stations or platforms, until now.
The new Southgate pilot location will allow for testing on the service before expansion into other locations, the City says.
In July, Mayor Don Iveson requested city administration find out what work had been done on cell phone and WiFi coverage in LRT stations and tunnels. He also wanted to know what the opportunities and risks of enabling more coverage were, particularly when the LRT is underground.

In Nov., the city presented its report, which found that cell reception at LRT stations was limited. The report also outlined plans to expand Wifi and cellphone coverage along the entire LRT route.
The City believes expanding wireless service to LRT stations and platforms helps Edmonton become an open city, which is an initiative to connect Edmontonians to City information, programs, services and engagement.
