UPDATE: Jury selected for Saskatoon trial where assault upgraded to murder

SASKATOON – Saskatoon’s first homicide investigation of 2015 is underway. A 44-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in provincial court Monday morning.

During the early hours of Feb. 13, MD Ambulance was called about an injured person in the 1200-block of Avenue F North. A 51-year-old man was found and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police identified a suspect and arrested him for aggravated assault on Feb. 19.

The victim remained in hospital and succumbed to his injuries on Feb. 21. His name has not been released.

The suspect’s assault charge has been upgraded to second-degree murder.

According to Saskatoon police’s year-end crime stats, there were seven murders in 2014 and four in 2013.
