EDMONTON — A 34-year-old woman is dead following a shooting on the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, and one person is facing a list of charges.
Mayerthorpe RCMP were called to the area west of Edmonton around 4:50 a.m. Sunday after a women was reportedly shot inside a vehicle.
The body of Shawna Paul, a resident of the Nation, was found inside the vehicle. An autopsy on Monday confirmed she died of a single gunshot wound.
Police are still working to determine what led to the shooting.
“Based on the initial information obtained the person responsible and victim are known to one another,” said Staff Sgt. Brent Sawatzky.
Giovanni James Alexis, 20, was arrested and charged with several offences, including manslaughter with a firearm, criminal negligence causing death, possession of a firearm while prohibited and breach of probation by drinking.
Alexis is scheduled to appear in Mayerthorpe Provincial Court via CCTV on the morning of Thursday, February 12.
The Edmonton Major Crimes Unit and the Forensic Identification Section assisted with the investigation.
