Calgarians gather to mourn deaths in Pakistan school massacre

CALGARY- Protests continue to rage in Pakistan,  following the Peshawar school massacre.

About 150 people were killed, many of them children after the Taliban opened fire on students and teachers.

MLA Manmeet S. Bhullar and Deepak Obhrai were among many who attended a ceremony to honour the victims of Peshawar school massacre.

“These people came in, they shot the administrator first, then the mother, then son, which is 11 year old.”

At the Pakistani Cultural Association, candles are lit as dozens of people gather to pay tribute to the nearly 150 people killed in the attack.

“Majority of these people may not be directly related to those affected in Peshawar but right now, everyone is affected ,”  Mohammed Yaseen from the cultural centre said. “Pakistan is not going through this, I think the whole world is going through this right now.”

In Pakistan, people demonstrate in the streets demanding justice and the elimination of the Taliban.

Many hope the young lives lost won’t be forgotten.

“We hear about Iraq, we hear about Syria, we hear about Afghanistan but we don’t always hear about Pakistan and I think this specific event is a reminder Pakistan has been on the front line fighting terror for so long,” MLA Manmeet S. Bullar said.

Schools in Peshawar have re-opened.

On Saturday, security forces killed at least five militants.

But there are still safety concerns the Taliban is seeking revenge for attacks on tribesmen by the military.

“Taliban says if you hit us, we will fight you back we will hit you back.” Sharaz Khan from the Pakistani Youth Organization said.

Despite the uncertainty, the community is determined to stay strong and hold those dear to them a little closer.
