GATINEAU, Que. – Canada has been drawn in a challenging pool with China, New Zealand and the Netherlands at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
The Canadians are ranked eighth in the world while China is No. 14, the Netherlands No. 15 and New Zealand No. 19.
John Herdman, who led New Zealand at two World Cups, will coach Canada against China in the opening game.
The draw took place Saturday at the Canadian Museum of History.
The 24-team tournament runs June 6 to July 5 in Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver.
Canada will play its first two round-robin games in Edmonton before moving to Montreal for the third.
The top two teams in each of the six groups plus the four best third-place finishers advance to the knockout round of 16.
Canada looks to win its group, to avoid big guns from other pools and to avoid additional travel.
Group C and some Group D matches will be played at Vancouver’s BC Place stadium.
