Pedestrian struck and killed in south Edmonton crosswalk

EDMONTON — A 65-year-old woman is dead after being struck in a marked crosswalk by a suspected drunk driver.

Edmonton police were called to the area of 71 Street and 86 Avenue around 9:15 Friday night.

Officers say the woman was lying in a crosswalk, suffering from life-threatening injuries. EMS crews treated the woman on scene, but she was pronounced dead when she arrived at hospital.

Witnesses tell police a man driving a 2005 Ford Explorer was heading north on 71 Street when he turned west onto 86 Avenue, striking the woman in a marked crosswalk.

Anton Magas, 77, has been charged with impaired driving causing death and driving over .80 causing death.
