WINNIPEG-Hockey Winnipeg is teaming up with the Winnipeg Police Service to make sure this hockey season is peaceful.
Hockey Winnipeg says the 2012/2013 season had three to five serious incidents including one that left a player with a broken wrist after an on-ice altercation others resulted in criminal charges being laid.
“In all honesty, some of the things happening in the rinks, you wouldn’t do that in the workplace, would you? We just want to bring some respect back in the game,” said Hockey Winnipeg’s Monte Miller. “This initiative is a bit of an education process for everybody.”
The program is called, “Checking In” and kicks off this weekend. Police will be at Varsity View and Notre Dame arenas Saturday and and Mosienko and Notre Dame arenas Sunday.
“We’re going to be networking in the crowd for the purpose of propagating that, ‘respect in sport’ message,” said Sgt. Ben Haegman of the Winnipeg Police Service. “We are there to provide support, demonstrate that support on behalf of hockey Winnipeg and their efforts.”
