Ottawa police cordoned off a widening area around the War Memorial as they searched for a gunman following a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon.
Officers armed with rifles dashed across the road and crouched behind concrete barriers; there was a moment of pandemonium when police yelled at a jostling contingent of journalists and onlookers to “Get down!” and as far away as possible in what turned out to be a premature alarm.
The area near Chateau Laurier remained cordoned off late Wednesday afternoon. But in a press conference police would confirm neither that the dead suspect was a lone gunman nor that they are searching for another shooter.
