CALGARY – Canadian Blood Services says donors are needed immediately to increase Canada’s critically low blood inventory.
Supplies are at a six-year low.
And the agency says if they’re not replenished, some medical procedures may have to be postponed.
One person who personally knows the importance of “the gift of life” is Michelle Salt.

The paralympic snowboarder lost her leg and nearly her life in a motorcycle crash three years ago.
“Blood played a huge role.”
Salt adds, “if it wasn’t for the 28 complete strangers that went in and donated blood, I wouldn’t be here today.”
“I was staring death in the face after I hit that guard rail. I see the importance in donating blood now.”
Canadian Blood Services says it’s well below it’s preferred inventory of 5 to 8 days.
The agency says an unusually high number of donation appointments were missed this past summer, resulting in the shortage.
It says the greatest need is for type O and A blood.
