EDMONTON – A herd of sheep were given a celebrity style send off in Fort Saskatchewan Monday morning.
It’s become tradition for residents to line city streets to say good-bye to the sheep who spend the summer keeping the grass trim around the community.
“We’re very proud of sheep program. We’re the only community that’s been able to keep it going for 21 years, and it’s very exciting to see the population come out,” said Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Gale Katchur.
The “environmentally-friendly lawn-mowers” have become celebrities and a tourist attraction in Fort Saskatchewan.
“When people talk about Fort Saskatchewan the first thing they think about is sheep,” explained Katchur.
“Although we’re known for industry, the sheep give us that lighter side, the homie feeling, and it’s just a real comfort for people.”
The 55 sheep will spend the winter in Stony Plain, before returning to work next summer.
