REGINA – An off-duty Regina Police Service dog has bitten a member of the public.
The incident happened on the Exhibition grounds just after midnight this morning.
A uniformed police officer took the dog out, off-leash, for his regular exercise. When they got to the west end of the parking lot, the dog headed towards some nearby buildings at the northwest end of the parking lot.
The dog focused on a 38-year-old man walking alone in the same area. There was an altercation between them and the man was bitten on the arm. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
An RPS spokesperson says the dog is still a serving member, but is not currently in service.
The man was not a suspect in any investigation.
The officer contacted the supervisor, who came to the scene. The entire matter is currently under investigation.
Police say it’s typical to exercise the animals in public areas, but not where the public is present at the time.
No other details were provided Friday afternoon.
