4-year-old boy drowns in slough in central Alberta

EDMONTON – A four-year-old boy is dead after drowning in a slough in central Alberta Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a rural property near the Town of Lougheed, southeast of Edmonton, around 4:15 p.m. after the boy was reported missing.

By the time RCMP, fire and EMS arrived, the boy’s family had found him unconscious, face-down in a nearby slough.

STARS Air Ambulance was called to scene and CPR was performed on the boy, however, he could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cst. Jason Curtis says the boy and his mother were visiting the boy’s grandparents, and at some point during the visit the boy left the main residence.

RCMP say the family thought the boy was with another family member, so he was not reported missing for about an hour after he left the residence.

The boy’s name will not be released.
