EDMONTON – Two people were taken to hospital Thursday afternoon after a fiery crash between a tractor trailer and a backhoe on Highway 16 at Range Road 54.

It happened around 2:45 p.m., according to Evansburg RCMP. Officers say both vehicles were heading east on Highway 16 at the time of the crash.

The driver of each vehicle was taken to hospital, although the extent of their injuries are not known.

There is extensive damage to the road surface on Highway 16, and RCMP say eastbound lanes in the area are currently closed; only one westbound lane is open. Motorists are being encouraged to avoid the area by finding alternate routes if possible.
