EDMONTON – A 26-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin into Canada in a backpack with modified compartments.

The charges come after the Canada Border Services Agency seized 2.82 kilograms of the drug at Edmonton International Airport on Wednesday, May 28, 2014.
The CBSA says Rosmin Kaneza was travelling to Edmonton from Brussels, via Reykjavik, Iceland, when she was referred for secondary examination by officers.
Officers emptied the woman’s backpack, but noticed it was still “excessively heavy,” according to the CBSA.
A false compartment in the lining of the backpack was discovered, where officers uncovered the narcotics and arrested the woman for smuggling.

Kaneza has since been charged with importation and possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking.

Since January of this year, CBSA officers at EIA have made 47 drug busts, seizing more than 250 kilograms of drugs.
